Writing Program at AASU

Syllabus

There are certain requirements dictated by the University and by the State that must be taken into account and articulated in your Course Policy. Some of these may be imbedded in the syllabus itself and some must be an explicit part of your course policy:

" a description of your course policy: begin your syllabus by defining your goals and outcomes. See the LLP course objectives.
" a focus on "critical thinking": include these words, perhaps in your course policy to connect with the course outcomes articulated in the catalog.
" a distinctive oral component: be certain to incorporate an oral presentation, informal or formal group work, or some sort of "speech" component.
" required word processing of papers: all students at AASU have access to campus computer labs.
" attendance policies: clearly articulate your expectations for attendance.
" plagiarism policies: see AASU handbook which states "All students at AASU must agree to abide by the Honor Code and Code of Conduct found at the appendix to the catalog."
" required texts and assignments: provide an outline of expectations.
" writing center information: see above.
" evaluation standards: see the departmental standards and be clear to avoid any grade discrepancy later.
" Regents' Test preparation: see above.
" a library orientation and use of internet as means of research: see above.
" Include the following statement for 1101 and 1102 courses: "Students must earn a grade of C or better in ENGL 1101 to qualify for admission to ENGL 1102."
" A statement concerning disabilities like the following: "Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, AASU provides appropriate, reasonable accommodations to students with documented disabilities. Documentation and services are available at the Office of Disability Services located in Student Affairs in MCC."
" Optional: classroom conduct policies such as tardies, cellphone usage, etc.
