"Under the mud in the dark of the sea there
books are, bones are."
--Ursula K. LeGuin, from "The Inland Sea"
~~~~~~~~~
"Dullards, we are set again to the cryptic blank page
Where the sea schools us with terrible water.
The noise of a boat breaking up and its men is in our ears.
The bottom here is too far down for our sounding;
The ocean was salt before we crawled to tears."
--William Meredith, from "The Wreck of the Thresher"
    Watermarks is an online journal of student-authored academic essays supported by the Core Curriculum Committee and the Writing Center of the Languages, Literature, and Philosophy Department at Armstrong Atlantic State University. Selections are chosen through an Annual Essay Contest. The judges of the 2000 Contest were Dr. Chris Baker, Professor Frank Clancy, Dr. Thomas Cooksey, Professor Vicki Hill, Dr. Carol Jamison, Professor William Martin, Dr. Deborah Reese, Dr. Jim Smith, and Professor Robert Stutts. Student writers of winning essays were recognized at an Awards Ceremony held on campus in Gamble Hall in late Spring. The Department congratulates these student writers who express their creative minds and hearts so well.
