The poet is like a boy poised on a rock who must produce an original waterfall,
father a brook, or fertilize a tree.
--Robert Francis, from "Beyond Biology"

The true artist: draws out all from his heart, works with delight, makes things with calm,
with sagacity, works like a true Toltec, composes his objects, works dexterously, invents;
arranges materials, adorns them, makes them adjust.
--Denise Levertov, from "The Artist"

  • Watermarks is an online journal of student-authored academic essays supported by the Core Curriculum Committee and the Writing Center of the Languages, Literature, and Philosophy Department at Armstrong Atlantic State University. Selections are chosen through an Annual Essay Contest. The judges of the 2000 Contest were Dr. Chris Baker, Dr. Thomas Cooksey, Dr. Carol Jamison, Professor William Martin, and Dr. Deborah Reese. Student writers of winning essays were recognized at an Awards Ceremony held on campus in Gamble Hall in late Spring. The Department congratulates these student writers who express their creative hearts and minds so well.
