What is Sigma Tau Delta?

*Sigma Tau Delta is the International English Honor Society. One of the largest members of the Association of College Honor

Societies, it was founded in 1924 at the Dakota Wesleyan University. The purposes of the society are to confer distinction for

high achievement in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies; to promote interests in literature and the English

language on local campuses and their surrounding communities; and to foster the discipline of English in all its aspects,

including creative and critical writing.

There are over 600 active chapters of Sigma Tau Delta, and approximately 7,000 members are inducted annually. Among them

have been such persons as Eudora Welty and Robert Bly. Sigma Tau Delta holds its international convention each year at

various locations. Alpha Gamma Rho hosted the 2000 convention in Savannah, and we continue to send representatives to the

conventions each year. The convention is a truly wonderful experience that allows hundreds of Sigma Tau Deltans from

around the globe to gather in one locale, share experiences and ideas, be recognized for their achievements, and participate in

the offical side of the society. Members have the oppurtunity to present their creative and scholarly works in one of the many

panels that are held each day of the convention.
