J. Seth Riley

Personal: I was born on February 8, 1978, in Savannah, Georgia, where I grew up and will continue to live until graduation.

Family: My parents, both of my brothers, and my sister all live in Savannah. I am the youngest of four, and all of my siblings are married. I have a nephew named Frank who will be three in June. He will have either a brother or sister and a cousin coming along this fall. We're all very excited!

Schooling: I graduated from Benedictine Military School in 1996. I am now a student at Armstrong Atlantic State University, where I am an English Major and Communications Minor. I am presently a Senior, though I have taken a number of graduate level classes. I plan to graduate with a BA in May, 2001.

Plans for the future: After letting my brain take a much needed vacation over the summer, during which I plan to wait tables (again), I will return to AASU to finish my degree. I then plan to pursue a Master's degree in Graduate School, though I am not yet positive which school. I have worked with three campus publications, as well as peer tutoring in the Writing Center. I hope to someday work in a publishing house or teach in the college classroom. My dream job is to be a film critic, but we'll see what happens.

Interests and Hobbies: I am a member of Sigma Tau Delta (English), and have enjoyed three years of work on the Calliope, AASU's annual literary and art journal. During those years, I have served as a staff member, Art Editor, and Managing Editor. I also enjoy working with student writers in the Writing Center. I am also a huge film buff. My favorites are Blue Velvet, Edward Scissorhands, and The Wings of the Dove. I also enjoy black and white photography. I have used all of my electives (and then some) to acquire my amateur skills. Aside from those three, the hobby that keeps me sane is my love of travel. I have had the chance to visit the Bahamas, London and surrounding parts of England, and last year I was able to travel to Europe. I backpacked with five friends last June through nine countries (including airports). My favorite places were Switzerland and Italy. Favorite Courses I am Taking: My Communications Minor has a film concentration, and those classes are always my favorites. I am currently taking Film and Literature and Film Acting , both with Dr. Karen Hollinger. Dr. Hollinger is a really wonderful professor and her classes are always interesting. The Film and Literature course has been very influential on me, and my newest interest is comparing film adaptations to their literary sources. I am also pursuind an independent study in photography, which I have really enjoyed this semester. It is always refreshing to see your work going in new directions.

The paper is a study of the ideological struggles in the popular television show Ally McBeal, as well as an investigation of the conflicted star persona of the show's lead actor, Calista Flockhart.
