English Language and Literature Mission Statement |

The Bachelor of Arts in English and the Bachelor of Arts in English (Communications) aim at three audiences: students (1) seeking a liberal arts education, (2) pursuing specific development of comunication skills, and/or (3) anticipating graduate studies in the humanities. Toward these ends, the majors propose:To support a historical, cultural, and critical study of selected periods, genres, and authors.
To explore issues of cultural, racial, ethnic, and gender diversity.
To enhance students' literacy through reading and discussing a wide variety of literary texts.
To increase students' understanding of the history, meanings, functions, and structures of the English language.
To refine students' writing skills.
To develop students' analytical, critical, and interpretive skills.
To provide students with a historical foundation in British, American, and world literatures.
To train students in advancd research skills, including familiarization with electronic and other sources.
To familiarize students with the major currents of critical theory, scholarship, and the profession.
