Sample Annotated Bibliography (courtesy of Dr. Howells; your annotations should be longer)

Hooks, Bell. "Confronting Class in the Classroom." Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom. New York: Routledge, 1994. 177-190. Print.

In this collection of fourteen essays, Bell Hooks defines feminist pedagogy as an engaged pedagogy which accepts the differences among students and encourages multiplicities of voices and knowledges to challenge the boundaries that separate people and imprison them, thus, denying them freedom. In her essay"Confronting Class in the Classroom," Hooks demonstrates how noise, volume, and disruption in discussion can create possibilities for students who do not understand academic decorum because of their class background. In examining how to encourage students to participate in discussion in order to improve their writing, I will employ Hooks' theories about the reticence of students who have been prejudiced against because of class. I will use this theory to inform my practice of writing to talk, then talking to write.

Topic Proposal

Be sure you have consulted me about your topic before you begin to write the proposal!
The proposal should be approximately three pages in length and should consist of the following:
1. A clear statement that defines and limits your topic.
2. A description of your research plan. Make clear the critical problem you want to explore, why it is important, and how you plan to go about researching it. Describe the critical perspective you plan to use (which must in some way connect to New Historicism), and explain how you will use this perspective to explore your topic. Also, explain how the topic connects to the course topic of 'chivalry.'
3. Do some preliminary research to ensure that the topic is viable. Make a working bibliography for this research. You should find at least eight potential secondary sources.

Proposals will be presented to the class on March 9th and March 11th. If you are not present on both days, I will deduct points from your proposals (unless, of course, you have a documented excuse). The proposal presentation should be approximately five minutes in length in addition to allowing time for questions.

Annotated Bibliography
Due March 25th

The Annotated Bibliography must contain ten secondary sources that are significant to your topic. You are responsible for researching the major scholarly issues pertaining to your topic, and these issues must be represented in the Annotated Bibliography. In other words, you should survey the kinds of scholarship pertaining to your topic so that you are familiar with the most reputable scholars and the most relevant and/ or current issues surrounding that topic. The research that you choose for this assignment should include prominent books and articles that have stimulated significant scholarly debate. You will need to go beyond JSTOR for this task. Be sure that your annotations represent a variety of sources, especially books or sections of books and articles from major scholarly journals. Use extreme discretion in your use of internet sources. Each annotation should be at least 12 sentences long. Include how the source will be of use to your specific thesis.
