Although Chretien's version of the Grail quest is incomplete, for Malory, Lancelot’s son, Galahad, achieves the Grail. Galahad is, on his mother’s side, a descendent of Joseph of Arimathea, who lifted Christ from the cross. His mother, the beautiful Elaine, sleeps with Lancelot with the help from a magic woman who disguises Elaine as Guenevere. When Guenevere finds out, of course, she is furious, especially when Elaine fools Lancelot a second time. But the union produces the most Godly of Arthur’s knights. Galahad is a virgin whose sole mission is to achieve the Grail. Once he does so, he lives only a short while, for he is simply too perfect, too pure, for this world.
