Composition and Rhetoric
Research Project
Topic:
Find a current problem in your community and write an essay in which you explain the problem and offer potential solutions (or a single solution). The problem must be sufficiently narrow in scope so that it can be thoroughly explored in a brief research essay. If you choose a national problem, you must discuss the problem as it affects a particular local area.
Rhetorical requirements:
Use rhetorical devices we have discussed throughout the semester as you see fit. Be sure to use sound logic, and demonstrate the persuasive appeals we have discussed in class. You must demonstrate pathos, ethos, and logos, and avoid logical fallacies.
Research requirements:
You will need at least four secondary sources. These sources may include books, journals, newspaper articles, news reports, and respectable web sites. Be sure that you vary the kinds of sources you use. You may also use an interview if you have a connection with an authority on your topic. I’ll look for a variety of sources. At least two of the sources must be very recent (published in 2011).
Format and length:
I will pay close attention to proper format of quotes. You must include xerox pages of all sources from which you quote directly. The final paper must be at least five double-spaced, typed pages (excluding the Works Cited page) and must accord with current MLA documentation.
Grading:
This paper should be your best work this semester and should demonstrate that you have mastered any grammatical problems. Remember that the final grade is based on drafts and in-class work as well as the final product itself. Essays must be submitted to Sourcecheck by December 1! Essays not submitted to to SourceCheck will not receive a grade and can result in failing the course.
Topic proposals:
Proposals of one page are due November 8 and should include some preliminary research as well as a tentative thesis statement and plan for proving the thesis.
Your final grade will consist of the following items which should be submitted in a paper folder with pockets (such as you used for the Portfolio):
- Topic Proposals
- Summary/Paraphrase practice
- peer review sheet
- Final
